Mapping Module Overview

This module is intended to include home study of the "Mapping" section in Chapter 4 of the Handbook, which provides the academic background.  The classroom session introduces the student to the equipment and methods used for mapping common types of reefs, and considers the degree of accuracy expected with each type of map.

Classroom Objectives

At the completition of the Mapping module classroom session, the students should be able to:

  • Define "map"
  • List at least 4 potential reasons for mapping a reef
  • Define "scale"
  • Describe the primary coordinate system(s) used to reference a location, and the signals available to mariners for establishing the coordinates of the location
  • List at least 3 limitations of underwater mapping
  • List at least 4 pieces of equipment used for mapping underwater
  • Explain the purpose of a grade classification on a map
  • Select the grade of map needed for the intended use of the data
  • Plan the dives necessary to map a wreck site with at least 3 other divers
  • Describe the data to be collected along each radial of a radial strip map
